Homemade Body Wash/Shampoo With Just 4 Clean Ingredients!

Homemade Body Wash/Shampoo

I think you’ve already gathered from some of my other posts that I’m starting to enter the (easy) DIY world…of skincare products anyway.  (Hand soap, hair masks, clarifying hair treatment anyone?)  Now, I’m more of a bar soap kind of girl (Dr. Bronners is my favorite) but my husband goes through body wash like nobody’s business.  He clearly hasn’t realized how fast that stuff eats at our grocery budget, not to mention that there’s a million less than desirable ingredients in most of the store-bought versions. He had used a 2-in-1 body wash/shampoo so I decided to start looking for an easy homemade version for him.

Being the research queen that I am, I took note of the main ingredients fellow healthy living/DIY bloggers were using and took stock of what I already had in the house.  The main things I was looking for in a body wash/shampoo is something that was moisturizing, cleansing, and had some anti-bacterial properties.  Luckily, many of the ingredients that kept popping up were ones I already had in the house like honey, castile soap, tea tree oil, and sweet almond oil.  I’ve played around with the measurements, but I think I’ve finally found the right mix.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1/3 cup Castile soap
  • 1 T raw honey
  • 1 t sweet almond oil
  • 10 drops tea tree oil
  • 1 plastic container (I use these Target travel containers).

Instructions:

  1. Add castile soap to the plastic bottle.
  2. In the measuring cup, add the honey and sweet almond oil.  Mix until honey is nicely combined with oil.
  3. Add honey and sweet almond oil to the bottle with the castile soap.
  4. Add tea tree oil and shake bottle so that the ingredients are mixed together well.

DIY Or Buy?

My husband has used this homemade body wash/shampoo for the last few months and I haven’t gotten a single complaint about it, which I’ll take as a complete win since he is still a bit skeptical about all of my mad scientist concoctions. A bottle using these measurements lasts about two weeks, but now that I know that he likes it, I plan on purchasing some bigger bottles so I don’t have to make it as often.  This is definitely something that I will continue to DIY since it is super easy to make, I always have the ingredients on hand, and it is much cleaner than the store-bought versions. Also, you can change-up/omit the essential oil and you can substitute with another carrier oil as well.  I love being able to customize our soaps and skincare products based on our personal preferences!

Hmmm, I never would have thought to put honey in a body wash! I’m always in Whole Foods exploring the body wash and bar soaps. I may have to make my own with your recipe now! Thanks for sharing =)

Me either Addie! Once I started reading more about honey and it’s benefits though, I realized it can be used in a ton of different beauty and skincare products. The honey mixes well with the other ingredients in this body wash so it doesn’t feel sticky or anything when you are using it. Thanks for stopping by!

That’s awesome that there are only 4 ingredients. I don’t use body wash either, but my husband does too! I think he would really like this, and sounds like it would smell good.

Definitely give it a try Shann Eva! It’s certainly saving us some money, plus I love knowing exactly what is in our products. Thanks for stopping by!

I’ve been toying with the idea of making my own shampoo. Not sure my husband would be on board though. I’ll have to give your recipe a try! Thank you for sharing at Merry Monday!

Definitely give it a try Amanda! My husband was a little skeptical at first too, but since I do the grocery shopping, it was either use it or go shopping himself, which I knew he wouldn’t want to do! And now he likes it, especially when I told him that we are saving money! Thanks for stopping by!

I completely understand you trying out the whole “mad scientist” thing. I’ve been experimenting lately myself, and my husband definitely thinks I’m crazy! However, whenever you find a recipe he likes you know you’re doing something right! I can’t wait to try this one out too 😉

I’m glad I’m not the only one 🙂 I feel so much better knowing exactly what is in the products we are using, especially those used frequently. Once I tell my hubby that it is saving us money (which it is!) he’s fine with it! Plus the alternative is him doing the shopping and I know he doesn’t want to do that! Thanks for stopping by! I would love to hear what fun “mad scientist” things you’ve been liking!

“Mad scientist concoctions” hahaha that sounds like me too! I made some anti-dandruff shampoo a few months ago for my husband…he didn’t really complain, but he was a bit skeptical lol. Will have to try this body wash!

Haha that’s great Kyra, I love that others like to experiment with different products too! Definitely give this body wash a try, it’s a keeper around here! Thanks for stopping by, have a great weekend!
